Victorian Summer Party

Step into a weekend of traditional village festivities – Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 from 10am to 5pm.

Some parties are worth dressing up for.

This weekend, Kings Landing fills with the music, laughter, and friendly rivalry of a 19th-century summer party — and everyone’s invited to join in. Cheer on the hoop racers. Try on a bonnet and dress the part for a garden party. Find your footing on the barn dance floor.

Come for an hour or stay for the day. Events run throughout the weekend and welcome all ages, so follow the music, pick your moment, and let the summer take you back.

What’s Happening – ALL WEEKEND

Thaumotropes At the Welcome Centre from 11am – 3pm
One of those wonderfully simple inventions that somehow never gets old. Draw two images, spin the disc, and watch them magically merge into one. It’s a little bit science, a little bit art, and a lot of fun. Drop in and make your own to take home.

Punch and Judy Puppet Show In Front of Slipp House at 11am and 2pm
The beloved, chaotic, and slightly scandalous Punch and Judy show is a staple of Victorian entertainment – Expect slapstick, squabbling, and plenty of audience participation. Equal parts hilarious and anarchic, it’s a crowd favourite for a reason — and the kids usually aren’t the only ones laughing.

Getting Ready For The Party At the Slipp House patio at 1230pm
Watch as our interpreter transforms into a properly turned-out Victorian guest — corsets, layers, buttons, and all — with a little help from a friend. It’s part fashion show, part history lesson, and you might leave with a newfound appreciation for the zipper.

Hoop and Stick Race In Front of Joslin Farm at 130pm
One of the most beloved pastimes of 19th-century childhood, the hoop race is simple in theory and trickier than it looks. Learn the technique from our interpreters, then put it to the test against your fellow visitors. All ages welcome — though bragging rights are not guaranteed.

Spelling Bee Prince William School at 1030am and 1pm
Step inside and test your mettle in a classic Victorian spelling bee. No phones, no shortcuts — just you, a word, and your best attempt. A beloved tradition in 19th-century schools and communities, it’s a friendly competition that’s harder than you remember and more fun than you’d expect.

Country Dance At the Summer Stage from 3pm – 5pm
Join us at the Summer Stage for an afternoon of country dancing, led by our interpreters and set to live music from guitarist and singer Tom Richards. Think barn dance energy: lively, welcoming, and just the right amount of chaotic. Whether you know the steps or you’re making them up as you go, there’s a place for you on the floor.

What’s Happening – SUNDAY ONLY

Church Service Prince William School at 2pm
Join us for a traditional church service at Kings Landing, led by our interpreters and rooted in the rhythms of 19th-century community life. Whether you come to worship, to listen, or simply to experience a quieter moment in the village, all are welcome through the doors.
