Fall Felting Workshop with Nichole Saunders (sign-up required)
October 3 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
In this immersive workshop with Artist in Residence Nichole Saunders, participants will explore felting techniques to make Halloween and fall-themed 3D sculptures; participants will be starting with a pumpkin, ghost, apple, or leaf, and then (depending on progress) a black cat or owl. There will be wool, cashmere, Angora, synthetic, and more fibre material for guests to work with.
Workshop takes place at the Learning Centre on October 3 from 1-4pm. Admission to Kings Landing is required; there is no extra cost to participate, but sign-up is required online due to capacity. Participants will be working with sharp needles – only open to ages 10 and up.
Nichole is an artist who specializes in 3D while also having a love of traditional craft. She has combined these loves and has been creating 3D sculptures in felt and polymer clay for the last seven years. She attended the Centre for Arts and Technology for 3D animation, NBCC for Applied Arts, and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for Digital Media. While being a Student Life Coordinator, she immersed herself in the textile studio and found her love of needle felting.
Nichole is creating a collection of sculptural dioramas that explore local (Atlantic Canada) animals, created to represent different characters of the Kings Landing villagers. The sculptures will be mixed media, consisting of needle/wet felt and polymer clay with wire armatures. In her research of each animal, she will create a series of sketches and watercolours of both the creature and its environment.
“This project will provide me with a chance to explore more advanced felting techniques,” she says. “I have long held a personal interest in history and how it can be taught to younger generations. This residency would positively affect my artistic career by giving me my first collection to date that follows a clear theme and narrative.”
